A new distribution centre on the outskirts of Utrecht triples online supermarket Picnic's storage capacity.
According to Michiel Muller, this involves the number of square metres, which has been expanded to 7000 m2. 'The capacity increase in number of orders will be greater,' the co-founder told Twinkle. In total, the online supermarket expects to employ three to four hundred new workers at the new distribution centre on the Lage Weide industrial estate in Utrecht, where Hema and FonQ, among others, also have their warehouses.
Through local hubs, Picnic transports groceries to customers in one of 90 electric cars. So far, the service delivers in Amersfoort, Almere, Leusden, Soest, Maarssen and Utrecht. In total, the company processed around 225,000 orders last year.
From April, Delft, Rijswijk, Leidschendam, Voorburg, Nootdorp, Delfgauw and Den Hoorn will be added. Ede, Veenendaal and Bennekom have also been confirmed. Medium-sized cities such as Apeldoorn, Gouda, Lelystad and Zoetermeer are in the pipeline, according to Muller.
So the expansion in distribution centres is no superfluous luxury. In fact, there are already plans for a new, automated DC. Besides the expansion, the company will also continue to use part of supermarket Boni's distribution centres in Nijkerk.
