Some 10 to 20 per cent of trucks supplying Rotterdam will drive at night in the future. That is the outcome of a pilot by the Verkeersonderneming. After the roll-out in Rotterdam, the rest of the Netherlands may follow.

Saving time
According to project leader Thierry Verduijn, night transport saves around 15 to 20 per cent in time. Moreover, according to Verduijn, every carrier has enough volume to realise part of the flow of goods in the evening or at night. "During the day a trip takes five-quarters of an hour, at night three-quarters of an hour. The concept is very simple, but never applied in this way before," Verduijn said. The pilot was conducted with Aviko, a large food producer. This used a hub, where containers or loads are brought to be taken further to their destination during the day.
