Flemish transport companies are likely to be compensated for the kilometre charge they pay. Minister Schultz van Haegen is not happy about that. "I have informed my Flemish colleague that I want to have a discussion about this," she said.
The Flemish transport sector will receive a rebate on the tax, so on balance they will not pay much in kilometre charges. This is not wrong in principle, as Belgium's road pricing is subject to the Eurovignette directive. "This offers room for compensation," says the minister. However, she does stress that plans in Belgium must be in line with this directive.

The kilometre charge for trucks will start on 1 April 2016. The rates vary by region. For Flanders, the rates are between 7.4 and 20 cents per kilometre. This amount depends on the weight, road type and emission class of the means of transport. TLN/EVO expect the Belgian road pricing scheme to cost the transport sector 36 to 40 million euros annually.
