Smartphones are a major source of distraction for drivers and pose a risk to road safety. Minister Schultz van Haegen is therefore calling for a ban on using smartphones whilst driving.
The Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management says in the Algemeen Dagblad that she would prefer smart technology, which would partially switch off your phone while driving (so-called car mode). To this end, Schultz will enter into talks with telecom companies.
Also at the TLN Annual Conference, the minister warned transport companies about inattentive drivers behind the wheel. Smartphones are often used for navigation, but are also a source of distraction. 16 per cent of traffic jams are caused by accidents, in which smartphones also play a major role. During the conference, she argues that transport operators need to address their professionalism. "Make sure your drivers do not use smartphones behind the wheel. We are doing plenty of campaigning. We have targeted campaigns for young cyclists. And truck drivers are also an important group. The risks are simply too high now. Legally, all sorts of things are regulated. Handheld phone use is prohibited. Driving and rest periods apply. For employers, the VVN has a supporting toolkit ready for measures you can take yourself. What matters is that you take responsibility."
