In 2016, there were
261,500 safety inspections were carried out by BMWT, the advocate for suppliers of construction machinery, warehouse equipment, road construction machinery and transport equipment. That is an increase of 8.2 per cent compared
compared to a year earlier. The vast majority (90 per cent) of inspections were carried out in the intralogistics sector: mobile internal transport,
warehouse equipment and traction batteries; the remaining 10
per cent of inspections were done in the GWW sector and construction:
earth-moving machinery, lifting equipment, hoisting machinery and civil &
utility construction.
All but one of the product categories showed growth. The categories
warehouse equipment, traction batteries and machinery civil &
utility construction showed double-digit growth.
BMWT director Jan Hommes attributes the increase not only to the improving
economy, but mainly to the growing safety awareness of employers. "It
is the safety policy of employers that determines whether work equipment is
inspected. Fortunately, they are aware of the importance of healthy and safe working.
Attention to safety also improves productivity and thus the financial
bottom line."
