A growing
number of employers have had a safety inspection carried out
carried out. Particularly in the intralogistics sector, work equipment was frequently inspected, as evidenced by the number of periodic safety inspections carried out under the BMWT-Keur scheme.
In 2016,
261,500 safety inspections were carried out by BMWT, the trade association representing suppliers of construction machinery, warehouse equipment, road construction machinery and transport equipment. This represents an increase of 8.2 per cent
compared with the previous year. The vast majority (90 per cent) of the inspections were carried out in the intralogistics sector: mobile internal transport,
warehouse equipment and traction batteries. The remaining 10
per cent of the inspections were carried out in the civil engineering and construction sectors:
earth-moving machinery, lifting equipment, hoisting machinery and civil &
non-residential construction.
All but one product category is showing growth. The categories
warehouse fittings, traction batteries and machinery for civil and
commercial construction have seen double-digit growth.
BMWT director Jan Hommes attributes the rise not only to the improving
economy, but primarily to employers’ growing awareness of safety. “It
it is employers’ safety policies that determine whether work equipment is
inspected. Fortunately, they are aware of the importance of healthy and safe working practices.
A focus on safety also improves productivity and, consequently, the financial
performance.”
