Fashion retailer Mango has moved into a highly automated multichannel distribution centre near Barcelona. Intralogistics specialist TGW was commissioned to design and equip the distribution centre - which supplies more than 2,200 shops and online customers.

Mango experienced strong growth in recent years. With annual sales of €2.2 billion, 15,000 employees and 2,200 shops in more than 100 countries, the fashion group deemed it necessary to consolidate its supply chain. To optimise delivery times and reduce logistics costs, Mango chose to build a central hub in the Catalan municipality of Lliça d´Amunt.

Flexible solution

Austrian-based TGW provided the automation of the distribution centre. The result is a combination of flexibility and performance, says the intralogistics specialist. The solution helps the fashion retailer prepare clothes on hangers and pack folded clothes and accessories. David Bendien, CEO Southern Europe at TGW: "The new solution is fully automated and combines both flexibility and dynamism with maximum control over each process. And all this at a modest cost of ownership."

In the inbound area, boxes are received directly into containers or on pallets. The storage and order preparation zone consists of a miniload system with 44 aisles and a storage capacity of 850,000 boxes. In the picking zone, orders are prepared daily for folded garments and accessories. The zone includes eight automated stations that place the receiving boxes in the storage bins and a Stingray shuttle system. The latter consists of 14 aisles with 13 levels each for delivering mono-reference boxes to TGW's picking workstations.
