The Dutch transport and logistics sector grew again in 2015 compared to the previous year. Growth over the past year was 3 per cent and the same percentage is also expected to progress in the coming year. Only price and returns still lag behind in some cases. The ING Economic Bureau conducted research and recently published the report figures.
Inland shipping
Inland shipping is also on the rise again. Partly due to the low water, cargo volumes rose by about 3 per cent, but growth in turnover lagged behind, increasing by only 2.5 per cent compared to the previous year. Container shipping in particular should achieve higher turnover in the new year due to sustainability and energy transition.
Aviation
Aviation is also expected to grow by around 3 per cent in the coming year. Cargo traffic lags behind passenger traffic. This is partly due to stagnant growth in China although the North American market offers prospects.
More freight
For the coming year, the industry expects an increase in freight. Structural growth remains and is mainly due to outsourcing from retailers and specialist shippers and the large number of online purchases. Retailers remain critical so the industry must continue to work hard to keep customers happy.
Innovation
Where the logistics industry can still gain a lot is innovation. This needs to be introduced to stay ahead of the competition and optimise processes. Many start-ups are already innovating and competing with existing companies.
