More and more transport companies are boycotting transport to England to protest against the refugee problem at Calais in France.
Stalled trucks in the Calais area are constantly besieged by refugees. In addition to the boycott, companies are taking all kinds of measures to prevent this and ensure the safety of drivers, for example by replacing tarpaulins with hardened bodies.
In and around Calais, the large number of refugees trying to hitchhike to England via trucks has been struggling for ages. Not only is there an unsafe situation for drivers, they can also risk a fine if it turns out that refugees did come along. Shippers' organisation EVO advises truckers en route to England not to stop from England. But that does not solve the problem. Indeed, trucks stuck in traffic jams are also regularly assailed.
