Stalled trucks due to traffic jams cost Dutch businesses 1.4 billion euros last year. That is the highest damage amount ever measured.
That is the conclusion of Transport en Logistiek Nederland and evofenedex after an inventory by research firm Panteia. Two years ago, this would have cost the business community 1 billion euros in damages.
The increasing traffic jam damage puts pressure on the logistics of Dutch trade and manufacturing companies, evofenedex told NOS. "In the long term, this has a negative impact on the business climate for companies in the Netherlands. Investments in infrastructure are therefore badly needed," general director Machiel van der Kuijl argues.
The organisations advocate widening roads and removing slip roads on motorways so that traffic has to 'weave' as little as possible. Investment in public transport is also desirable so that travellers prefer trains to cars more often.
