The number of periodic safety inspections increased in 2019. Companies had their work equipment inspected 328,188 times last year, up 6 per cent from 2020.

This shows figures from BMWT-Keur. According to the inspection organisation, the growth is visible in all product categories, from mobile internal transport and warehouse equipment to earthmoving machines and hoisting equipment.

BMWT-Keur attributes the increase partly to the continuing economic growth; as the number of machines in the market increases year on year, the number of inspections automatically rises. "But that is certainly not the only reason," states BMWT director Jan Hommes. "Another important reason is that safety is increasingly higher on companies' agendas."

According to the organisation, more and more managers are seizing their safety responsibilities. "Periodic inspections of machinery are not only required by law, but also make a major contribution to a safe working environment."
