Export containers transported by sea must be compulsorily weighed by shippers. This has been decided by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). This duty will take effect on 1 July 2016 and will apply worldwide. Shippers can verify the gross weight by weighing the container on a weighbridge, or by taking the total weight of cargo, pallets, packaging materials and the weight of the container together.

Authority approval
The method of calculation must, in any case, be approved by the competent authorities of the country where the container is loaded. This may vary from country to country. The shipper must provide the total weight of the container to the master and the terminals in good time, so that they can draw up the ship’s stowage plan in accordance with the weights provided.
