Picnic opened a new distribution centre in Diemen early this year. The online supermarket has now given its first look at the new location, where, according to founder Michiel Müller, "everything is software driven".
In the new distribution centre, peanut butter is next to toothpaste and shower gel next to sweet and sour sauce. Picnic has a good reason for that. Not only does the software calculate what the most efficient router is for the order picker, this illogical arrangement can also prevent errors. Müller: "If you have 20 types of tea, and you put them all next to each other, you can very easily make a mistake."
The new distribution centre has an area of ten thousand square metres and employs around five hundred people. The new location complements the current centres in Nijkerk and Utrecht. After expanding to Amsterdam, Müller expects to process at least ten thousand orders per day there.
