From 1 July, the T-driving licence will be introduced in the Netherlands: a driving licence for tractors and limited-speed motor vehicles (MMBS). Vehicles that cannot exceed 25 km per hour may only be driven by someone in possession of a T-driving licence. What does logistics have to do with this? The driving licence also applies to forklifts entering public roads.

The legislation relies on forklifts wider than 1.30 metres. In addition, the forklift must drive on a road where road traffic laws apply.

Private property or public road?
What should you pay attention to? In principle, if you drive on your own property, you do not need to hold a T driving licence. However, you should always ask yourself whether the road traffic regulations also apply on your premises. This varies from case to case. Usually, this is determined by checking whether access to traffic is actually open or tolerated. Putting up signs with 'private property' or 'no access' are not enough here. Closing off the site with a fence or barrier will usually suffice.

Exception
The new legislation does not apply to forklifts no wider than 1.30 metres, which are used for loading/unloading a vehicle in the immediate vicinity of an industrial hall or warehouse.
