Globally, the transport of goods grew substantially in the past decade. In this, inland shipping was particularly popular. Especially the BRIC countries, such as China and India, did well, figures from research firm Panteia show.

Panteia surveyed 64 countries that together account for 90 per cent of the world's total transport of goods. In 20 years, transport via road, rail and inland waterways rose from 95 billion tonnes to 128 billion tonnes; a growth of 34 per cent.

BRIC countries
In particular, Brazil, China, India and Russia, the so-called BRIC countries, did well. Over the past decade, the percentage of transport in China grew by 95 per cent and in India by 75 per cent. In this, inland shipping was notably more popular than rail transport. India leads the way with 175 per cent growth in inland waterway transport since 2005. In Europe, road transport decreased by seven per cent.

Expectations
For 2016 and the following year, Panteia expects another increase. The research firm bases this on figures from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Growth is mainly expected in inland navigation. Land transport remains virtually stable.
