As many as 28 new XXL distribution centres have been built since 2013. Among these, North Brabant is the favourite. This is evident from research by Buck Consultants International.

These distribution centres cover an area of more than 40,000 square metres and employ more than 10,000 people. The centres are said to be especially in demand by retailers and brands, both for online and offline sales. Seventeen of the 28 distribution centres, for instance, were intended for retailers and brand owners like Tesla and Michael Kors. Logistics service providers were also said to be keenly interested in the mega DCs. "A key driver is economies of scale so that the latest technology can be used, staff efficiently deployed and deliveries combined," says managing director René Buck. "A lot of space is also needed to unpack items that consumers return, inspect them and prepare them for shipment again."

North Brabant is most popular as a logistics location. As many as 43 per cent of new XXL DCs are located there, followed by Limburg (25 per cent) and South Holland (18 per cent).

Buck Consultants International expects growth to continue for the time being. For instance, 11 new distribution centres are already planned by the middle of this year. That is almost a doubling compared to last year.
