Jumbo Supermarkets has engaged a new technology partner to plan and control its supply chain in a more customer-focused way. Quintiq has been selected to further optimise the supermarket chain's supply chain.

Jumbo's transport and warehouse capacity consists of 10 distribution centres, nearly 600 shops and around 500 trucks, both owned and chartered. Planning includes shop distribution, home delivery, logistics between distribution centres, inbound transport and return flows for all channels. Through a planning solution that integrates with existing systems, Jumbo obtains full supply chain transparency.

"We have found the right technology partner to plan and control our supply chain in an even more customer-oriented way," says Karel de Jong, Director Supply Chain at Jumbo. "This from an integral supply chain perspective, demand-driven and optimised based on Jumbo business goals and constraints. "

Planning conditions and regulatory restrictions

The new technology partner must take into account a whole range of requirements and conditions. Jumbo's planning requirements include shop opening hours, specific delivery schedules, number of employees and services, and compartments with different temperatures in vehicles. The solution must also take into account regulatory restrictions, such as restrictions when transporting fresh products, as well as legal regulations regarding drivers' rest and driving hours.

Tactical, operational and execution level

Quintiq's software is used for Jumbo's logistics planning at tactical, operational and execution levels. Using scenario-based tactical planning, Jumbo can evaluate possible options against specific KPIs. For operational planning, it takes into account the latest order volume and resource capacity to plan up to one week ahead. On the day of execution, the solution ensures goods flows based on orders and supports planners in managing disruptions.

"Jumbo's large, complex supply chain is growing rapidly. Optimised planning is crucial to reach its full potential," says Rob van Egmond, CEO at Quintiq. "That's where Quintiq comes in. We can deliver real-time insights that help Jumbo make the right logistics decisions quickly. This allows Jumbo to improve the availability of its products and increase customer satisfaction."
