Logistics employees at Albert Heijn will get a 5.75 per cent pay increase over the next two years. People will also be hired on a permanent basis for the first time in a decade. This is stated in the supermarket chain's new collective labour agreement. Trade union CNV is satisfied and speaks of a 'break in the trend'

Trade unions CNV and FNV reached an agreement with Albert Heijn on Friday for the five thousand distribution workers. The new collective agreement is valid for the next two years.

Quitting earlier

Besides the pay rise, agreements have been reached on retiring earlier. Those approaching retirement age can retire three years earlier. An important agreement, argues FNV executive Özcan Colak. "The work in distribution centres is tough. As an older worker, you now get more chance to reach your retirement healthy."

Permanent jobs

Thirty employees will be offered permanent contracts by Albert Heijn. That is not a lot, but CNV says it is a promising change of course now that people are being hired on a permanent basis for the first time in a decade. The CBA also agreed to extend the job guarantee. Staff are guaranteed jobs until 31 December 2024.

The two unions are positive about the outcome of the negotiations, but say they are neutrally submitting the agreements to their members. A final decision will follow later this month.
