Almost half of logistics workers are not prepared for the future. Many logistics jobs will look different in ten years' time, but not everyone can keep up with these - mostly technological -changes.

Recruitment agency Hays comes to that conclusion following its 'Job of the Future' survey. Hays asked 350 logistics employees about their expectations about the future.

A majority of employees expect some jobs to disappear due to digitalisation, automation and robots. However, these developments will also create new jobs. Creativity, technological skills and people-oriented qualities will prevail in these new jobs, respondents expect.

Technological knowledge not enough

Around half of employees indicate that their technological knowledge is notup to date even now, and 36 per cent of those surveyed feel that not enough training is offered to keep knowledge and skills up to date, while they consider such retraining essential to remain employable in the sector.

'Developments will be gradual'

The Transport and Logistics Sector Institute also stresses to the Algemeen Dagblad that training is important, for example to deal with technology. "The employer has a role in that, but also the employee himself," says director Willem de Vries. "If you remain static, you fall off." De Vries does not expect many employees to lose their jobs as a result. "Developments will be gradual. Ten years ago, for instance, we also did not expect that now almost everyone can work with an iPhone."
