Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is taking harsh measures following DHL's logistics fiasco at the end of last month. Problems in the new carrier's supply chain left hundreds of restaurants without chicken. Former distributor Bidvest will now resume some of the deliveries.
The fast-food chain had switched to a new carrier on 13 February: DHL, which promised a "new benchmark for fast food delivery". The mega-contract reportedly led to major problems in the carrier's computer system. As a result, hundreds of restaurants ran out of chicken and had to close their doors. Much of the meat ended up having to be thrown away.
British media estimate the total cost at €1.13 million a day. Reason for KFC to call again on former carrier Bidvest, which specialises in food transports. The South African company will supply 300 of its approximately UK 900 outlets.
Still 3 per cent of KFC outlets closed. DHL immediately apologised for the fiasco, but claimed it was not solely responsible for the problems that arose. Critics see it differently. DHL allegedly not only did not have its ICT in order, but also was not adequately equipped to deliver perishables. For instance, it would arrange distribution from a central depot.
