Montapacking has acquired industry peer De Brink from the bankruptcy estate of Wial. The move underlines Montapacking's growth strategy. "Only a few big players will soon remain in the fulfilment industry. We are among them now and we want to remain among them."

A few weeks ago, it became clear that Wial - owner of De Brink since 2017 - could not keep its head above water, after which bankruptcy was filed. Montapacking subsequently decided to acquire De Brink from the bankrupt's estate.

'Bridgehead to Germany'

"An opportunity like this doesn't come along every day," explained Montapacking managing director Edwin van der Ham. The fulfilment company recorded significant growth within a short period of time and wants to maintain that trend. "This acquisition therefore fits well with our growth strategy, with Enschede being a perfect bridgehead to Germany."

Van der Ham says De Brink's employees and customers have had a turbulent time. Last year, the Enschede-based company was acquired by industry peer Wial. Immediately after the takeover, the new company's direct-mail activities were transferred to Wial in Etten-Leur, while all fulfilment activities were concentrated in Enschede. A few weeks ago, however, Wial was declared bankrupt.

Maintaining employment

According to the trustee, fulfilment activities in Enschede will be continued, with the aim of retaining as many jobs as possible. Van der Ham also underlines that. "The employees have shown their best side, despite the turbulent times and uncertainties. That should be rewarded. The receiver has given notice of dismissal to the company's 27 employees. However, we are entering into talks with the employees at very short notice with the intention of getting as many as possible back to work. At their familiar workplace."

Montapacking itself employs 400 people across multiple locations. "Montapacking's core values are Enthusiastic and Excellent, so people who fit that are happy to rehire."
